Produce Enough Breast Milk for my baby? Am I having low breast milk supply?

Article | Increasing Breast Milk Supply

Many breastfeeding mothers are not certain if their babies are getting enough milk or if their supplies are enough for their babies?

In fact, breast milk is produced based on your baby’s demand, the more that you feed, the more milk will produce.  I should say that as long as your breast milk is enough to satisfy your baby, then you are fine.  Why I said so? Share with you my two breastfeeding experiences from my first and second girl, Marion and Macey.

My breast milk supplies for both of them were about the same.  I produced average 1 oz to 1.5 oz per hour, which is about 30 oz to 35 oz per day. This amount was not sufficient to satisfy Marion but was more than enough for Macey.  Read on why?

Marion demanded more and faster then what I could produce.  She would demand one feeding in every 2 to 3 hours, day and night around the clock, that is about 8 feedings, for the first six months since she was born.  When Marion reached 3 weeks old, she could finish 4 oz for at least 8 feedings a day, which was about 32 oz per day.  Her demand increased in almost every 2 weeks.  She started 2 oz per feeding for the first week and reached 8 oz per feeding when she was 4 months.  Due to her high demand, I tried many ways to increase my milk supply and at the end, the best way was to combine pumping with natural supplement (I am a strong believer in natural remedies rather than prescribed drugs).  I was happy that I could manage to supply good enough for her, even though it was not fully, as I believe that breast milk is still the best, cheapest and safest gift for my babies.

Oppositely, with the same amount of breast milk production, I could keep Macey satisfied for the first 12 months without adding any formula in between and with no worries to increase my breast milk.  Macey, is a little piglet, who slept through the night, from 7pm or 8pm to the next morning, 6 am or 7am.  Macey needed about 4 oz per feeding and about 6 times per day, which is about 24 oz per day.  Since she did not demand at night, I managed to pump at least twice and stored additional milk during the day for her when I returned to work.  However, I worried about her low milk demand and had sought doctor’s advice.  I was so relieved when the doctor mentioned that as long as the baby’s weight gain, urine and stool outputs are fine, baby should be fine.  Some babies just don’t drink that much.

Observe your baby’s weight gain, urine outputs and stool outputs are the best way to determine if your baby is getting enough milk.

There are many satisfied breastfeeding mothers, just like me, have successfully increased breast milk to satisfy their babies.  One of the successful ways, and the most effective way, that I should say is to combine pumping and taking natural supplement.  I would strongly suggest you to try natural remedies first before considering prescribed drugs.
